Email Marketing: The Advantages & Disadvantages

Email marketing has been HOORAYed and BOOed.  It has been seen as the answer to your wishes and the cause of your failure.


What are the pro’s and con’s of email marketing?

The Cons

Email marketing often gets blamed for bad activities and is seen as a con because people don’t use it correctly.  A few ways people misuse email includes:

  1. Spamming – not getting permission and just slamming people with ads
  2. Not focusing on the customer – emails that are all about ‘look at us’ and ‘look at our product’ and forget to focus on what’s in it for the customer give a bad taste in people’s mouths
  3. Emailing too frequently – This is difficult because there is not a hard and set rule on how often you should email.  There are some emails that come in weekly that come in weekly that I think are too much.  And then there are other emails that come in several times a week and I want more.  The industry and WHAT you send it a good determinant of how often you can send.

Another aspect of email marketing that a lot of people don’t realize is the AMOUNT OF TIME AND WORK needed to go into a good email campaign.

If you are not willing to put the work in, don’t bother.  You will be just another person sending emails and not creating a valuable campaign.

The Good

Email marketing still has one of the highest ROIs for marketing
